English 1B Grading Components

Naming the Parts - Unit 1 Lesson 1 Reading About the Website

If you've read the syllabus(and it was reprinted in the last Lesson) as instructed in the Welcome Message sent to students a few days before the beginning of the quarter, THEN you are familiar with these course requirements. I list them below so you can sense the "landscape" of the course but rest assured that they will be explained in much detail all in good time! These are the course requirements you need to meet to successfully complete the course:

  • Reading Writing about Literature as assigned each week
  • Reading the assigned short stories and poetry in Literature Without Borders
  • Reading Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund Rostand
  • Reading the Book Club novel you've chosen and contributing to the Book Clubs
  • Writing the five essays and submitting them on time (three in-class, two out-of-class)
  • Participating in the weekly Comment Circles in the Forum
  • Writing the synthesis of one Comment Circle OR on Book Club meeting during the quarter
  • Attending and actively participating in the three On-Campus meetings
  • Presenting at the Colloquium (mandatory meeting #3)
  • Attending one In the World event and posting a review in the Forum
  • Posting weekly and as assigned to the Forums (think "homework")

These are the essential "parts" of the course. You will need to complete these to pass the course at a "C" level. Those wishing to earn an "A" in the course will of course be actively engaged in class discussion in the forums, prepare qualitatively superior work and contribute to the course and its resources beyond the basic requirements above.
