Maxim MOSFET driver dissipates to 2W
Posted : 03 Aug 2004

Maxim Integrated Products released its latest high-speed, dual MOSFET driver that is capable of dissipating up to 2W at 70°C ambient temperature.

The MAX5054 is engineered for use in power MOSFET switching, motor control and the design of ultra-compact, high-frequency, switching power supplies. Each MOSFET driver is capable of sourcing and sinking up to 4A peak current with a 20ns propagation delay. The propagation-delay matching between channels is typically 2ns and typically less than ±10ns from part to part.

According to Maxim, the product's low propagation delay over the supply voltage range and tight delay tolerance between devices allow excellent control when driving the MOSFETs in push-pull converters, and for driving secondary-side synchronous rectifiers in isolated power supplies.

The MAX5054 is rated for operation from a 4V to 15V supply voltage and can withstand up to 18V transients. The driver IC's inverting and noninverting logic inputs are designed to operate at up to 18V, regardless of the VDD supply voltage. The device includes a logic circuit to prevent internal shoot-through current during output state change. A choice of either VDD/2 CMOS (MAX5054A) or TTL (MAX5054B) logic input is available.

The MAX5054 is available in the -40°C to 125°C automotive temperature range in a 3-by-3mm, 8-pin thermally enhanced TDFN package with exposed pad. The TDFN package has a 44 percent smaller footprint than commercially available FET drivers in LLP packages and is 71 percent smaller than the 8-pin SO package. Prices start at 78 cents (1,000-up, FOB USA).
