The poet made an interesting connection between his father's farm work with his writing. The father in the poem was digging with a spade, and obviously the poet was very proud of his father. The writer described his father's hole digging and his grandfather's turf cutting work in detail, and he also compared his grandfather with other workers. The comparison of the the grandfather and other workers makes the grandfather stands out from others workers.

Besides, the poet made a connection between himself, his father, and his father not only by the family relationship, but also the work of digging. The poet was not doing physical work, like digging, himself, but he is able to virtualize his pen as a spade and determined to "dig" with his "spade" just like his father once did.

The poem was embedded with emotions towards the poet's father and grandfather with the interesting connection of digging.

The father was a farmer and farming. The son was a writer and writing. It's so interesting how the father and son can be linked together by digging.

The writer is so proud of his father, in terms of how his father was doing with the spade. The write mentioned his grandfather "cut more turg in a day than any other man" (93) too. This is the first time I have heard someone so proud of his father and grandfather digging.

I believe from time to time when the son write with his pen, he can smell the potato mould.
